In the middle ages, the European churches would contract a family of glass artisans to create the windows in the church.
This process would sometimes take two or three generations of the family to complete the project. The Church would effectively own this family for the duration of the project.
Colored glass was first discovered in 400 AD in North Africa by Bedouins in the ashes of their campfires. Different minerals in the various areas would mix with the sand and create various colors of glass.
Today there are myriads of colors, textures, and transparencies. Glass companies have estimated that they alone have produced over 4,000 varieties.
Glass art has been around for 1500 years.
NW glass artist Thomas Powell has not been around as long.
Tom is currently creating windows for a 100 year old railroad car owned by the NW Historical Railroad. A picture of one of the windows is shown above. The railroad car will be a working car and will travel a regular route from North Bend to Snoqualmie Falls.
Past customers include house numbers for Barber Construction, St James and Valley Medical Center.
Tom's prices average between $80 to $100 per square foot. The design at the top of this page (Crescent Moon) is approximately 2 feet long by 8 inches tall and is priced at $120.00
